TyE-Boston Alum team, Green Chilies, wins
THE GREEN APPLE ENVIRONMENT AWARD
A TyE-Boston Alum team Green Chilies has been in the news for winning a Green Apple Environment Award in the international campaign to find the world’s greenest companies, councils and communities. The team is headed to the House of Commons in London, UK, to receive the award in November this year.
From the TyE Class of 2009, the Green Chilies team continued on their path of entrepreneurship even after graduating from the program. They built Green Chilies into a non-profit organization with the goal of building green products to make the world more environmentally friendly. This year they submitted their idea of a Green TV to a Business Plan competition organized by the Green Organization.
Saniya Shah and Meera Nair of Green Chilies shared their TyE experience at the Launch of the TyE-Boston Class of 2012 on Sept 10th at MIT. They acknowledged that the TyE program helped them launch their business idea of GreenTV into a real venture.
Green Chilies competed against more than 500 other nominations and will be presented with their Green Apple Award at a glittering presentation ceremony in the House of Commons, Palace of Westminster, London, on November 14. Their winning idea, GreenTV helps to reduce e-waste by reusing obsolete computer monitors.
"We are absolutely delighted to have achieved such a prestigious international award," said Saniya Shah, President of Green Chilies. "We are committed to create a GREEN environment one project at a time. We are very proud to be receiving the Green Apple Award in recognition of our efforts and look forward to our visit to the House of Commons in November to collect the trophy."
“We are proud of this important achievement by the Green Chilies team, which is testimony to the TyE–program, which we believe teaches lifelong skills to TyE students,” said Vanita Shastri, Executive Director of TiE-Boston that conducts the TyE program.
As a result of this success Green Chilies has been invited to have its winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others around the world can follow their example and learn from their experience.
TyE or TiE Young Entrepreneurs is TiE-Boston’s signature program for high school students with a mission to excite young people to discover the rewards and challenges of becoming entrepreneurs and business leaders. This program introduces entrepreneurship and business to students developing their self confidence and leadership skills. Since its inception in 2005, over 200 students have participated in the program from over 25 local schools in New England.
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the major recognition for environmental endeavor among companies, councils, communities and countries. The awards are organized by The Green Organization, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognizing and promoting environmental best practice.
